It's time for another "Tune or No Tune" thread. All you need to do is decide whether the chosen song is a
TUNE (i.e. you love it) or a
NO TUNE (i.e. you hate it). Quite simple!
This week, we go back to 1986 (great year, by the way - I was born!) and over to Sweden for hard/glam rockers, Europe. And this song is probably their best known song - well, I knew the song, but not who did it. And it was so successful that it was number one in a staggering 26 countries! I am of course talking about
The Final Countdown.
Probably the most famous feature of the song is the keyboard rift - and it isn't half fantastic! Pure musical genius, in my eyes. There isn't much in the way of singing, but who needs it - that rift is good enough! And the actual lyrics of the song were inspired by David Bowie's
Space Oddity, another Classic.
It's extremely popular for public address systems to use, as the keyboard rift is so stirring. And for the keyboard rift alone, it is definitely a
TUNE.
For those of you who haven't heard the song, here is a link to YouTube. Also included is the live version from the Millennium celebrations inStockholm 1999-2000, as it is one of the best live versions of the song.
