Battle of the Bands - REGGAE

Here we go...here is the first genre up in the Battle of the Bands tournament. It's Reggae! Below are the 3 nominations that the 3 Regiments of the Band have put forward.

The Archers have nominated... BOB MARLEY

Bob Marley is one of the most widely known performer's of ska/reggae music, and is credited for helping spread Jamaican music to the worldwide audience. His music style became known as the normal for Carribean music and was spread throughout the world. He has released several hits that have topped charts throughout the world, and the compilation album, Legend, released in 1984, three years after his death, is the best-selling reggae album ever, going 10 time platinum. Today, you can still here Marley hits just about everywhere you go, epecially in coastal regions, where his music fits in perfectly as you sit in the sand with an ice cold brew watching the tide come in.

The Cavalry have nominated... ZIGGY MARLEY

We chose to champion Ziggy Marley because well Bob Marley was already chosen and we needed someone else that was well known. We figured that who better than the son of the legend himself. He is well know since he is the son of Bob, and his music has been around for several years. We think it’s about time for a good ole fashioned father and son duel in the battle of the bands!

The Infantry have nominated... UB40

UB40 are a British reggae band formed in 1978 in Birmingham. Featuring the same line-up of 8 musicians from 1978-2008, the band placed more than 50 singles on the UK charts, and achieved considerable international success as well. They first had their success when they were asked to join The Pretenders on tour as their support act in 1980.

UB40 is one of the most successful reggae acts of all time in terms of record sales (over 70 million), chart positions and touring schedule. During their three-decade long career, they have been performing sell-out shows worldwide and headlining the Reggae Sunsplash music festival in Jamaica, as well as spreading reggae to Russia and South America, among others. They even have performed at the BBC Proms, an event more associated with classical music. For over twenty five years, UB40 have continued the job of popularising reggae around the world. In the process, they continue to give enormous pleasure to a public too vast to be defined by age, generation tribe or fashion.

Yes Bob Marley is a great artist but since I grew up near Birmingham I'll have to pick UB40 (though what I know about reggae can probably be written on a postage stamp with room to spare )

I didn't discover Bob until 1975 when Live!,recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London, was released. Though Bob and the Wailers had released several studio albums by then I had not developed into a fan... But Live! changed all that and is a constant staple on my iPod to this day.  I start out almost every escort trip I do with Could You Be Loved, either by Bob himself or a live version performed by Ziggy Marley, Stephen and his sisters I found sometime ago.... Both will put a half awake Auld Pirate in a frame of mind like no other... 


Ziggy and his siblings have become incredible Reggae ambassadors in their own right, with Ziggy the most well known of "The Melody Makers." He carries on his fathers political activism and his music, though more in a pop vein sometimes, is still steeped deeply in Reggae... When Stephen, Julian and Damian perform with him more Dancehall, Reggaeton and other offspring of Reggae are heard. This is True To Myself   ....

This one is hard for me, I love UB40, I'm always listening to their stuff. It makes me feel really good and relaxed, but so does Bob Marley. I guess as Bob Marley was what got me into reggae at all, he gets my vote.

Bob Marley is the "Father" of Reggae. UB40 is the modern day version of Reggae. Althouth I like both I have to go with Bob on this one.
